Harlan Cohen to Speak at Mariemont Schools

Mariemont City Schools will be welcoming renowned speaker Harlan Cohen to the district on April 10. Cohen will be speaking from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Mariemont Elementary auditorium. All parents and guardians are welcome at the event.

Cohen considers himself an expert on life transitions. He is a New York Times bestselling author of six books, a nationally syndicated advice columnist and a speaker who has visited over 400 college campuses.

During his visit to the district, Cohen will be expanding his talk to focus on teaching children to be resilient during transitions. Harlan will be speaking to our 6th, 8th, and 12th grade students separately on April 11 to help them with their upcoming transitions.

His speaking engagement is made possible through the Mariemont School Foundation and is funded by the annual Warrior Run.

Presenting: Helping Anxious Kids with Dr. Andrew Sweeney

As part of our district’s Life & Leadership Series, Dr. Andrew Sweeney will be presenting “Helping Anxious Kids:  Continuing the Conversation” on Tuesday, October 3rd 6:30 to 8pm in the Terrace Park Elementary Library . This presentation is geared toward Kindergarten through 2nd grade students, however, all parents are welcome. Dr. Sweeney is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes Child and Adolescent Psychology, Psychological Assessment and Animal-Assisted Therapy. Presenting: Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Students

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Edward Amend, who will be speaking on the topic of “Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted Students” at Terrace Park Elementary on Tuesday, May 9 at 7pm in the library.

Sponsored by the Life and Leadership Series through the Mariemont School Foundation and paid for by Warrior Run funds, this event is open to all district K-6 parents and we encourage you to attend!

Dr. Amend is a Clinical Psychologist at Amend Psychological Services, P.S.C. in Lexington, Kentucky. He focuses on social, emotional and educational needs of gifted and talented youth, adults and their families. He is co-author of two award-winning books: “A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children” and “Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnosis of Gifted Children and Adults; ADHD, Bipolar, OCD, Asperger’s, Depression and Other Disorders.”

Patrick O’Connor, Director of College Counseling, Collegewise

PatrickOConnorPatrick O’Connor is on the Political Science faculty of Oakland Community College and is Associate Dean of College Counseling at Cranbrook Schools, both in metropolitan Detroit. Born and raised in Detroit, he has been a college counselor since 1984, serving students in rural, urban, and suburban high schools, as well as community college. In addition to writing weekly columns at Huffington Post and HS Counselor Network, his writing has appeared in MyFootpath.com, The Christian Science Monitor, The Washington Post, The Detroit Free Press and Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. Patrick has served as president of the Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling, and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. He is on the board of directors of the Michigan College Access Network, and on the credentialing commission for the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners. He is a recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award from Oakland Community College, the Margaret Addis Service to NACAC Award, and the William Gramenz Award (for outstanding contributions to college counseling in Michigan.) He holds five college degrees, including a Ph.D. in Education Administration.

The Life and Leadership Series is a collaboration between Mariemont City Schools and the Mariemont School Foundation to bring high-quality national experts and experiences to the district. The Series content is currently focused in the spotlight areas of College Planning, Leadership and Wellness. Funding for the series comes from Foundation grantors and donors. Your donation will help us sustain and expand the Life and Leadership Series to provide relevant and exceptional experiences for all district students.

Meredith Graham, Director of College Counseling, Collegewise

Meredith-GrahamMeredith spent seven years as an associate director of admissions at Cornell University. She also earned a master’s degree in higher education and worked as an academic advisor at Purdue, all after studying chemistry at The College of Wooster. A scientist and a counselor at heart, Meredith is also the author of the Collegewise publication, STEM’s Many Branches: College Planning for Students Considering Majors in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

The Mariemont City Schools and the Mariemont School Foundation are proud to announce the The 2015/16 Life and Leadership Series Speakers. The series is a collaboration between the District and the Foundation to bring high-quality national experts and experiences to our school community. The programs included in this series build upon the existing robust offerings throughout the District, creating an even more vibrant and well-rounded experience for our students and families.

The Series includes content funded by Foundation donors and grantors and is currently centered around three Spotlight areas:  Wellness, College Planning and Leadership.  The vision for The Life and Leadership Series is to expand the content and spotlight areas to meet needs and interests of students and families, as funding for the program allows.

The Life and Leadership Series is one of those extras that the Foundation provides in accordance with our Mission:  to support the long-term success of our students and community through initiatives that preserve, enhance, and sustain educational excellence.

The seminar will combine the latest information about scholarships, financial aid, student loans, and the college search process when financial issues are a factor. This presentation is relevant and important for all district parents. It’s never too early to start thinking about paying for college!
