Mariemont HS Distinguished Alumni to be Recognized at Homecoming Events

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet and congratulate the 2014 Distinguished Alumni at this Friday’s Homecoming Festivities. These truly Distinguished Alumni will spend the day, back in high school, where they will visit with students, meet the faculty and be introduced at a Pep Rally.  At 5:30 pm they will be featured as honored guests in the annual Mariemont High School Homecoming Parade.  Finally, the Distinguished Alumni will be formally introduced and recognized by Superintendent Steve Estepp before the start of the Homecoming Game against the Taylor High School Yellowjackets.  Please make every effort to be seated by 6:30, the recognition will begin promptly at 6:35.  Game begins at 7:00pm.

The second class of recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award has been selected from those nominated by a committee consisting of Mariemont Alumni board members and Mariemont School Foundation members. Congratulations to Jeffery R. Anderson, class of 1965, Pamela Coburn, class of 1970, and Harry N. Walters, class of 1954.

Jeffrey R. Anderson graduated from Mariemont High School with the class of 1965.  He attended the University of Virginia as a scholar athlete.  Following a brief career in the National Football League with the Washington Redskins, Jeff returned home to serve in the Ohio National Guard and begin his career in the real estate industry.  Jeff started Jeffrey R. Anderson Real Estate in the mid-1980s and has built its reputation as an award-winning retail developer.  Mr. Anderson and his wife Darlene are also committed philanthropists, giving significant time and resources to the local community, the real estate industry and the global community.

Pamela J. Coburn is a graduate from the class of 1970.  Ms. Coburn studied voice at Depauw University, Eastman School of Music and Juilliard School in New York.  Early in her career she won the ARD Competition in Munich, Germany and the Metropolitan Opera National Competition in the U.S.  Ms. Coburn went on to spend more than 20 years singing in the finest opera houses around the world and recording with the most important conductors in opera.  Ms. Coburn teaches voice at Depauw University, holding the position of Distinguished Professor of Voice.

Harry N. Walters is a member of the Mariemont High School class of 1954.  Mr. Walters graduated from West Point in 1959 where he played fullback, blocking for Heisman Trophy winner Pete Dawkins.  After serving in the army for four years, he began a successful career in the paper industry eventually becoming CEO of Potsdam Paper Corp.  In 1981, President Reagan nominated Mr. Walters as the Assistant Secretary of the Army.  In 1983, he was appointed by President Reagan to be Administrator of the U.S. Veteran’s Administration and served in that role until 1986.  Mr. Walters continued to serve the public in numerous positions and, today, is the CEO/Chairman of the Veterans Coalition, Inc.

 

Introducing Pamela Coburn, Mariemont High School Distinguished Alumna

coburn2cropDistinguished Alumna Pamela J. Coburn currently holds the position of James B. Stewart Distinguished Visiting Professor of Music at her alma mater, DePauw University.

Ms. Coburn graduated from Mariemont High School in 1970 and went to DePauw University to major in music education and to play on the tennis team.  She was encouraged to audition for an opera and landed a leading role.  With some nudging from her voice teacher Ms. Coburn quit the tennis team, accepted the role and never looked back.

In addition to studying voice at the Eastman School of Music and the American Opera Center of the Juilliard School, Ms. Coburn studied German Lieder with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf.  In 1980 she was the winner of ARD (German Broadcasting Co.) Competition in Munich, and in 1982 she won a similar competition at the Metropolitan Opera.

An international career in opera, oratorio and recital blossomed, taking Ms. Coburn to the world’s most renowned opera houses and concert halls where she performed leading roles among the best singers in the world over a 20 year period. The conductors and orchestras she has appeared with are legend.   Appearances include the Vienna State Opera, Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Opera in New York, in addition to opera house in Munich, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Paris, Toulouse, London and Tokyo.

Ms. Coburn invests in the future of classical music through her students.  She is humbled by the privilege of pouring out her wisdom and experience for the benefit of young singers.

Please join us this Friday for the Mariemont High School Homecoming and help welcome the 2014 Distinguished Alumni!  Ms. Coburn and her fellow honorees will be featured in the Homecoming Parade beginning at 5:30 pm, and will be formally recognized at Kusel Stadium, before the Warriors take on the Taylor High School Yellowjackets. Please be in your seats by 6:30 – the recognition will begin promptly at 6:35.

Distinguished Alumnus Jeffrey R. Anderson, Class of 1965

Mariemont High School Distinguished Alumnus Jeffrey R. Anderson is the Founder, CEO and President of Jeffrey R. Anderson Real Estate, Inc., one of the premier Midwest retail real estate developers.

After graduating from Mariemont High School in 1965, Mr. Anderson attended the University of Virginia as a scholar athlete.  Following a brief career in the National Football League with the Washington Redskins, Mr. Anderson returned home to serve in the Ohio National Guard and begin his career in the real estate industry.

In the early 1970’s, under the tutelage of Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, Mr. Anderson earned a reputation as an outstanding site selection specialist for various clients in the restaurant industry. He began work with Chi Chi’s Restaurants in 1976, eventually becoming Director of Real Estate.  Following a successful public stock offering, Mr. Anderson left Chi Chi’s to start his own company in 1985.

Mr. Anderson has built Jeffrey R. Anderson Real Estate into an award winning developer with “the Midas touch”.  His company has been consistently recognized within the communities in which it operates.  Local, high profile development projects include Rookwood Commons, Harper’s Station, Union Centre Pavilion, Kenwood Pavilion and Deerfield Towne Center.

Mr. Anderson and his wife, Darlene, are committed philanthropists, giving significant time and resources to the local community, the global community and the real estate industry.

Don’t miss the first program in the 2014/15 Life and Leadership Series this Wednesday!  

cybersafetyWednesday September 17th at 7:00pm, MHS Auditorium. As a part of our Spotlight on WellnessMike Dermody, M.Ed will present to all District parents on the topic of Cyber-safety. He will help parents recognize potential dangers and risks that face children in the online world. Learn the latest on what to watch for and how to protect your children in cyberspace.

Mike earned his Bachelors degree in Education at Xavier University and has a Masters Degree in Instructional Technology from the University of Dayton in Dayton Ohio. Mike spent 7 years in public and private schools as a middle school, junior high, and high school science teacher. Mike also has been an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton and is currently an instructional design consultant with an IT company in Cincinnati, OH. Mike has been delivering presentations to schools, churches, and parent organizations in the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton region for the past 8 years.

Introducing the Life and Leadership Series

The Mariemont City Schools and the Mariemont School Foundation are proud to introduce the The Life and Leadership Series. The series is a collaboration between the District and the Foundation to bring high-quality national experts and experiences to our school community. The programs included in this series build upon the existing robust offerings throughout the District, creating an even more vibrant and well-rounded experience for our students and families.

The Series includes content funded by Foundation donors and grantors and is currently centered around three Spotlight areas:  Wellness, College Planning and Leadership.  The vision for The Life and Leadership Series is to expand the content and spotlight areas to meet needs and interests of students and families, as funding for the program allows.

2014 Mariemont HIgh School Distinguished Alumni Selected

Mariemont High School Distinguished Alumni Selected
Recipients Include an Entrepreneur, Health Care Executive and U.S. Ambassador

(September 10, 2015) – The Mariemont Alumni Association and the Mariemont School Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of Mariemont High School’s third annual Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes Mariemont High School graduates of at least 10 years who have notably distinguished themselves by extraordinary contributions and/or remarkable accomplishments in their chosen career; skill, trade or business; in civic duties; in military service; in philanthropy; in volunteerism; in the arts; in the sciences; in education; in religion; or any other field, endeavor or pursuit.

The recipients are Donn M. Davis, class of 1981, Managing Partner, Revolution Growth; Michael L. Fordyce, class of 1969, President/CEO, Craig Hospital; and Mark W. Lippert, class of 1991, United States Ambassador to South Korea. The third class of recipients was selected from nominations submitted to a committee including Mariemont Alumni Association (MAA) and Mariemont School Foundation (MSF) board members.

On Friday, October 2, these truly distinguished alumni will spend the day at Mariemont High School, where they will meet the faculty, visit with students and share their stories of success. At 5:30pm, they will be featured as honored guests in the school district’s annual Homecoming Parade. Finally, the Distinguished Alumni will be formally introduced and honored before the start of the Homecoming Game at Kusel Stadium.

Donn M. Davis graduated from Mariemont High School with the class of 1981 where he was Senior Class President. He graduated from Miami University with a BS in in finance and then earned his JD from the University of Michigan Law School. Donn started his career as an attorney at Sidley & Austin in Chicago, specializing in media and technology transactions. At 29 years old, he became the youngest team attorney in Major League Baseball negotiating player contracts for the Chicago Cubs. From 1992 to 1998, he served in senior roles at Tribune Company, where he was President of Tribune Ventures. From 1998 to 2003, Donn was a senior executive at America Online, including President of the AOL Interactive Properties Group. He then became CEO of Exclusive Resorts, building it into one of the first successful “sharing economy” companies. In 2005 Donn co-founded venture capital firm Revolution LLC with Steve Case and serves as its Managing Partner. Mr. Davis and his wife Sharon live in Great Falls, Virginia with their three children, Cameron, Cooper and Tess.

 

 

Michael L. Fordyce is a graduate from the class of 1969.  Mr. Fordyce was a standout athlete at Mariemont High School, where he earned 10 varsity letters and held records in cross country and track. He attended the University of Cincinnati, graduating cum laude with a degree in business.  Mike advanced in his professional career, becoming the chief administrative officer for the Catholic Health Initiatives, a national healthcare system of 72 hospitals and 42 long-term care facilities where he served for 21 years. In 2008, Mike became the President and CEO of Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado, the position he holds today. Craig Hospital specializes in neurological rehabilitation and research and has been ranked the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the United States for the past three years (and top 10 for 25 years). Mr. Fordyce’s philanthropic pursuits include a deep commitment to various health care industry initiatives and the establishment of the Steve Mckee-Mike Fordyce Scholarship for Mariemont High School seniors.

 

Mark W. Lippert is a member of the Mariemont High School class of 1991. Mr. Lippert graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with both a B.A in Political Science and an M.A. in International Policy Studies.  From 1999 through 2005, he served as an advisor and a professional staff member for several Senate committees, advising Senators Patrick Leahy, Tom Daschle and others.  Mark followed as the foreign policy advisor for then-Senator Obama, working on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  Mr. Lippert has served as Deputy Assistant to the President, Chief of Staff for the National Security Council, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, and Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense.  In September 2014, he was confirmed as the United States Ambassador to South Korea.  His military service includes active duty deployments as an intelligence officer with the United States Navy to Iraq and Afghanistan with Seal Team One, and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, respectively.  Mark and his wife, Robyn, have one son, James William Sejun.
