Carrying Bags for iPads – ME 2nd grade

Act Now: Harlyn Properties will match up to $250 in donations.iPadBag The second grade teachers at Mariemont Elementary would like their students to have an easy way to carry their devices between classes. Today’s second graders change classes for Learning Labs, Science, Social Studies, as well as for accelerated and intervention classes. They need a simple way to handle carrying additional learning tools along with the iPad. Students take great care of their materials (school box, folders, iPads, headphones, stylists) but it is difficult to carry it all securely from place to place. Having a simple bag for iPads could allow them to have their iPad secure while moving about the school. Their hands would be free to navigate large doors and staircases. The impact on our students will be big. Some students have dropped their iPads because they are struggling to hold the railing on the stairs or open large doors while moving about the school. Dropping a device is emotionally upsetting. The worry of dropping an expensive device and falling because of being unsteady causes unnecessary stress for our younger learners. The student iPad bags would make it easier for the students to continue their work of joyful learning- with confidence. They know the iPad is a remarkable tool that allows them to work at different paces. They are energized and excited by their lessons. Simplifying how they move about the school with their iPads would greatly enhance their experience.

Children’s Book Publishing for 7th Grade

Active Now:  The Quarter Bistro will match up to $75 in donations.
The 7th grade Language Arts teachers would like to purchase blank hardcover books for a project-based learning HardcoverBlankBookunit on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  After interviewing peers and researching nonfiction texts, students will collaboratively write a children’s book that highlights an aspect of growing up. Seventh grade students will visit Mariemont Elementary School and Terrace Park Elementary School. They will share their children’s books with kindergarten students in these buildings, and they will donate the books to the kindergarten classrooms.

  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
  • Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
  • Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

We will place students in a leadership positions by asking them to share their stories with a younger audience.

This project allows students to demonstrate their understanding of literary concepts through creativity and collaboration. Giving students the hardcover books will demonstrate that we value their writing and believe it is worth sharing with a larger audience.
