Mariemont High School Distinguished Alumni to be Recognized at Homecoming Game

The Mariemont Alumni Association and the Mariemont School Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the first annual Distinguished Alumni Award.  The award recognizes Mariemont High School graduates of at least 10 years who have notably distinguished themselves by their extraordinary contributions and/or remarkable accomplishments in their chosen career; skill, trade, or business; in civic duties; in military service; in philanthropy; in volunteerism; in the arts; in the sciences; in education; in religion; OR any other field, endeavor, or pursuit, excluding athletics.

The first class of recipients has been selected from those nominated by a committee consisting of Mariemont Alumni board members and Mariemont School Foundation members. Congratulations to our 2013 Distinguished Alumni:  Karl Gordon Henize, class of 1943 (awarded posthumously,) Arthur Thompson Evans, III, M.D., class of 1965, General Jeffrey Foley, class of 1974, and Scott J. Hamlin, class of 1979.

These truly Distinguished Alumni will spend the day Friday September 27th, back in high school, where they will visit with students, meet the faculty and attend a Pep Rally.  At 5:30 pm on Friday they will be featured as honored guests in the annual Mariemont High School Homecoming Parade.  Finally, the Distinguished Alumni will be formally introduced and recognized before the start of the Homecoming Game against the Finneytown Wildcats.  Recognition will begin at 6:30.  Game begins at 7:00pm.


Karl Gordon Henize was a 1943 graduate of the former Plainville High School, which later became Mariemont High School.  Karl was a senior space agency scientist and oldest American astronaut to travel in space.  As one of the earliest graduates of the Mariemont School system, Karl Henize was one of the most decorated and celebrated in our schools history. Karl died in 1993 during a NASA-sponsored Mt. Everest expedition.

Arthur Thompson Evans. III, M.D is a member of the class of 1965 and a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.  Dr. Evans currently serves as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Cincinnati, and has made significant contributions in the field of Maternal Fetal Medicine and the management of diabetes in pregnancy.  As a current resident, Dr Evans has been a strong advocate of the Mariemont community and school system.

Jeffrey W. Foley is a graduate from the class of 1974.  General Foley spent a long and distinguished career in the United States Army, which began with his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point 1978.  General Foley is currently Vice President of Military Affairs for Georgia Regents University and Medical Center, and is a sought after public speaker specializing in leadership and team-building.

Scott J. Hamlin is a member of the 1979 graduating class and is the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.  Scott was the first in his family to graduate from college, graduating cum laude from the University of Cincinnati in 1982 with a BBA degree in Accounting. Scott has been a tremendous champion for Mariemont Schools, and has been a tremendous support to many local families and friends in need.
